Essaying Whiteness and Race in a Summer of Crisis

To write an essay is to be faced with two conflicting mindsets: To not know what to say at all, and to know exactly what to say yet not know how. This may be especially true in moments of collective crisis, which aren’t so much moments unto themselves as themes in an unfolding story. Crisis itself is the narrative structure. Essays, then, are much more than things to write; they are stories to inhabit, attempts at imagining some whole way of being.
